Recently (Sept 2024) 7 Agricultural Schemes introduced by prime minister of India for agricultural development.

In September 2024, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, introduced seven significant agricultural schemes with a total outlay of approximately ₹14,235.30 carore (PIB) (According to The Hindu 13,966 crore) . These schemes aim to modernize Indian agriculture, improve the livelihoods of farmers, and enhance food security. Here’s a brief overview of the schemes and their roles in Indian agricultural development:

Explanation of the seven agricultural schemes recently introduced by the Indian government:

1. Digital Agriculture Mission

Objective: This mission aims to leverage digital technologies to enhance agricultural productivity and efficiency. It is based on creating a digital public infrastructure (DPI) for the agriculture sector.

Key Components:

Agri Stack: A comprehensive digital framework that includes a farmer registry, land maps, and crop sown registry. This helps in accurate data collection and efficient resource allocation.

Krishi Decision Support System: Utilizes geospatial data, weather forecasts, groundwater data, and satellite information to assist in decision-making for crop management, yield predictions, and insurance. It also connects farmers to markets, buyers, and credit facilities.

Role in Development: By digitizing agriculture, the scheme aims to make farming more data-driven and precise, reducing risks and improving productivity. This could lead to better crop management, efficient resource use, and higher incomes for farmers.

2. Crop Science for Food and Nutritional Security

Objective: This initiative is focused on ensuring long-term food security and improving the nutritional value of crops, especially in the face of climate change.

 Key Components:

Research and Education: Focus on advancing agricultural research and education to develop climate-resilient crop varieties.

Genetic Improvement: Enhances the genetic quality of food, fodder, pulse, and oilseed crops to increase yields and nutritional content.

Management of Plant Genetic Resources: Involves conserving and utilizing plant genetic resources for sustainable agriculture.

Role in Development: By improving crop resilience and nutritional content, this scheme aims to secure the food supply for future generations while addressing current challenges like climate change.

3. Strengthening Agricultural Education, Management, and Social Sciences

Objective: To modernize agricultural education and prepare students and researchers for contemporary challenges in agriculture.

Key Components:

Modernization of Agri Research and Education: Aligning agricultural education with the New Education Policy 2020, focusing on digital tools like AI, big data, and remote sensing.

Incorporation of Natural Farming: Emphasizes sustainable practices such as natural farming and climate-resilient agriculture.

Role in Development: This initiative is vital for building a knowledgeable workforce that can tackle the evolving challenges in agriculture, thereby fostering innovation and sustainability in the sector.

4. Sustainable Livestock Health and Production

Objective: To increase income from livestock and dairy by improving animal health, nutrition, and productivity.

Key Components:

Animal Health Management: Focuses on enhancing veterinary education and improving the health management of livestock.

Dairy Production and Technology: Aims to develop technologies for better dairy production.

Animal Nutrition and Genetic Improvement: Improves the genetic quality of livestock and provides better nutrition, especially for small ruminants.

Role in Development: Livestock is a significant source of income for many farmers. By improving livestock health and production, this scheme aims to boost farmers' incomes and ensure the sustainability of livestock farming.

5. Sustainable Development of Horticulture

Objective: To enhance the income of farmers through the cultivation of horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants.

Key Components:

Diverse Crop Focus: Includes tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate crops, as well as spices, medicinal plants, and floriculture.

Modern Cultivation Practices: Promotes modern techniques for better yield and quality of horticultural products.

Role in Development: Diversifying into horticulture offers farmers alternative income streams and can significantly increase their earnings, especially in regions less suited to traditional crops.

6. Strengthening of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)

Objective: To enhance the outreach and effectiveness of Krishi Vigyan Kendras, which are key in transferring agricultural technology from research to practice.

Key Components:

Modernization and Capacity Building: Improving the infrastructure and resources of KVKs to ensure they are equipped to deliver the latest agricultural knowledge and technologies to farmers.

Role in Development: KVKs play a crucial role in educating farmers about new practices, technologies, and innovations. Strengthening these centers will ensure that more farmers benefit from the latest advancements in agriculture.

7. Natural Resource Management

Objective: To promote the sustainable use of natural resources, such as soil and water, in agriculture.

Key Components:

Soil Health and Water Conservation: Focuses on improving soil health through sustainable practices and ensuring the efficient use of water resources.

Role in Development: Sustainable natural resource management is essential for long-term agricultural productivity. This scheme aims to preserve resources for future use while enhancing current agricultural practices.

These schemes are designed to make Indian agriculture more resilient, sustainable, and profitable, contributing to the overall development of the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
